The trademark BENGALL was first granted to Luke Cadman in 1748, and stayed with the family until the closure of the business in 1965. Widows of freemen of the Cutler’s Company could carry on the family business using their husband’s corporate mark, which is what happened twice with the Cadman Family. Hannah Cadman, Peter Cadman’s widow, was listed as a razor manufacturer in the 1820s from Cadman’s Yard, Fargate, until her death in 1828, when her son Alfred took over the business. Alfred also died young, so his wife Mary took over from 1841 till the 1860s, when her sons Peter, Thomas and Alfred took over. Thomas fully acquired the business in 1871, and continued to make award winning razors from St. Mary’s Road, eventually giving the family business his name.
