David Mellor studied at the Sheffield College of Art, the Royal College of Art and at the British School at Rome, experience which gave him a strong background in design. This helped him when he set up his design business and workshop on Eyre Street opposite Walker & Hall in 1954. Walker & Hall hired him as a design consultant, to produce modern cutlery and holloware for them. Mellor had bigger plans though, and in 1969 he opened a shop in Sloan Square, London. He had also recognised that cutlery manufacturers could not compete with the cheap imports from abroad, so he decided to concentrate on the “relatively small, high level, design orientated market”.
In 1974-5 he renovated and moved into Broom Hall, an historic house which gave its name to the surrounding area, where he lived and had a studio-workshop. In 1990 Mellor moved out to a purpose built cutlery factory and shop in Hathersage called The Round Building. The Broom Hall workshops had become too small and Mellor had decided that it made more sense to have design, manufacturing and retail all in one place.
