The Cutting Edge Project was set up by Museums Sheffield, in collaboration with our partners in the Sheffield Archives and Local Studies Library, the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, Sheffield Assay Office and the Company of Cutlers’ in Hallamshire. The project researched and documented the Sheffield made cutlery in the Museums Sheffield collection, to produce the Sheffield Cutlery Map. The map brings together research on the development of the cutlery industry in Sheffield, and contextualises items of Sheffield cutlery within the Museums Sheffield collection with historic photographs, modern and historic maps of Sheffield, and company histories of the manufacturers. About fifty key objects and makers were chosen for the launch of the Sheffield Cutlery Map, with more objects and information from the partners involved to be added in future to enhance the website content.
As well as holding a series of lunchtime talks and a Sheffield cutlery celebration day in summer 2015, the project also produced an information leaflet to help direct people towards the right resources for personal and family research into the cutlery trade in Sheffield.
The project was funded by the Arts Council Designation Development Fund.
